An Overview of the Modern Torpedo Defense System

2 min read

It is necessary for nations bounded by water to have some kind of coastal defense system at all times.

One purpose of this is to protect their territory from possible military attacks. Another is to fortify their borders against illegal entry from outsiders.

The defense system usually consists of a number of ships, smaller boats and submarines. These marine vessels have their own built-in defense weaponry. Most of the time, they can protect themselves from random attacks. But things are different during times of war or when there is a known threat. In such cases, the military needs to fortify their defense with a much more aggressive system. This is where the torpedo defense system comes in.

What is a Torpedo Defense System?

Torpedoes are missiles that self-propel under the water until they reach their intended target. Upon contact, they will explode at once. There are two ways to launch a torpedo. The more common method is via a submarine or other marine vessel. The other is by dropping it from an aircraft into the water.

In naval warfare, torpedoes are the primary weapon for destroying large ships and submarines. If you want to protect your fleet from these homing devices, it is vital that you have a reliable torpedo defense system in place.

Different Kinds of Torpedo Defense Systems

There are many variations of the torpedo defense systems or TDS that have existed since the early days of naval warfare. Torpedo nets were very popular in the late 1800s until WWII. The torpedo belts and anti-torpedo bulge replaced the nets shortly after the war.

The most recent kind of TDS is a much more high-tech system that is very aggressive. It is capable of countering multiple torpedo attacks with very high accuracy. They make use of expendable soft kill decoys that automatically deploy and self-destruct. There are also hard kill decoys, which are very effective in protecting submarines against torpedo attacks.
